The Carrington art feature connects multiple facets of one of Calgary’s newest communities. Using Plan-Build™, Heavy Industries collaborated with NAK Design Strategies and Mattamy Homes to bring their unique concept of a gathering place to life. Carrington’s 0.9-hectare Greenway Park is home to the iconic art feature, along with a skatepark, playground, half-court basketball court and gathering plaza. Inspired by nature, the tree-like structures are designed to evoke a stand of Aspen trees – a species that is usually the first to take root in an emerging forest. This pioneering spirit represents the residents of the Carrington community who are settling into the new development for the first time. The interconnected leaves of the art feature, which greets residents at the Gateway to Carrington, represent the interactions and shared experiences to be found in the park. Mattamy Homes chose to bring Heavy Industries to the table early in the project to help them bring their vision to life and eliminate blind spots with Plan-Build™. Heavy worked side by side with NAK Design Strategies to ensure that the concepts were thoroughly vetted for budget, scope and materials. Once the initial concepts were developed, an iterative feedback cycle was kicked off to further explore the critical nuances of the entrance feature. Through collaborating with NAK and Mattamy early we could rapidly produce concepts that were richly detailed, maintained the intent for the space and fit the scope of the project. - NAK Design
